Communication is the process of attempting to impart information from a sender to a receiver with the use of a medium. Communication requires that all parties have an area of communicative commonality.

I personally appreciate the last part of this definition. that there must be a common area of communication.

As my in-laws are studying a new language, I am challenged by our own native language. and why on earth can we not effectivly communicate with one another. I have few dear friends who endured with me yesterday as they asked the fatal question of how are you doing!

In truth, I told them exactly how I was doing ! Not what they were expecting, to say the least! However shouldn't that be our form of commonality... truth. how many days out of the week are you really fine? Fine when someone asks how you are doing, the kids are fine, the house is fine, the weather is fine, work is fine.

But are we really? Just because we have the loving Saviour on our side, and we know our future is secured and we have hope on a daily basis, does that mean we are to be fine every day as well. Do we not have days of real emotion and reflection? Should we not ask ourselves some hard questions to be able to readjust our hope and focus?

Or should we be silent? Not asking those around us how they are doing. And not sharing with others how we are doing? Does that not stiffle our accountability and simple ability to communicate?

Thoughts to make you go hmmm on a cold rainy day in Orillia:)

Funny, a friend here and I were just talking about this this morning. It is our cultural way to use "How are you" as merely a greeting- it usually isn't really a question. My friend was telling me that her language helper is from Austria, and over there, "How are you?" really means what it says. So this lady had a very hard time when she came to North America, because as she launched into the details of how she really was the person who had asked the question was already gone!

We were saying how nice it would be if we were all transparent to each other, but how that also could create some problems like, "Well, don't ask so-and-so, you know you'll get a half hour sob story..." LOL That'd be what they'd say about me!!!
