U is for....
Understanding.
It is so hard to understand what you don't know. Who knows what has happened in the past of a child who you have only known for three days. We watched a very moving drama at our church this Sunday. At the end the father was arrested and taken away from his little son for reading the Bible. The scene was heart wrenching. ( I began to cry quite hard, and refused to get up to get a tissue as we happened to be at the FRONT of the church and did not want to walk all the way to the back to get one!). It made me think of foster kids, at any age. One of the big things they teach us in our training is to learn to see that there is a reason for their behaviors and that conventional discipline does not work with these kids.
It is our responsibility to understand these children, even though we don't have a clue what they have been through. It is how we should be with our fellow human beings. Let alone children.
It is a tough job.
Understanding that is.

Yes, it is easy to jump to conclusions, if you only want a conclusion. If you want to jump to an understanding, well, that's impossible.
I want to go for understanding as much as is possible. You get there through listening deeply and too often I don't listen enough or deeply enough.
